Summary: A Chloride Reduction Strategy – The Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF) partnered with the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) on a research study to quantify the impact of softener optimization on chloride discharge levels. The WQRF will present the findings and explain how other utilities can partner with industry to implement a similar chloride reduction strategy. Jeff Hellenbrand, President of a family owned water treatment company in Wisconsin, will discuss how softeners work, the factors which impact efficiency and some of his experiences working with Wisconsin authorities to optimize water softeners and lower the amount of chloride which reaches the treatment plant.

Eric Yeggy earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa and began his career in the environmental testing industry where he gained a wide range of experience in analytical chemistry and managing quality systems. In 2009, Eric joined the Water Quality Association (WQA) and led the development of new industry standards for Sustainability of Water Treatment Products, and new industry performance standards for Electrochemical Water Treatment Systems. Eric participates in numerous industry committees and task forces including the ASPE Plumbing Standards Committee and the IAPMO We-Stand Committee. Through his role as the Director of Technical Affairs, Eric plans and coordinates the activities of the WQA Water Sciences Committee which handles the technical and scientific tasks of the association. Eric also serves as the Scientific Consultant for the Water Quality Research Foundation (the WQRF), provides advice to their Board of Directors and plays a key role in review and prioritization of WQRF research proposals.
