Scope: This course is designed to train operators in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining water distribution systems, emphasizing safe practices and procedures. Topics include the role and duties of water distribution system operators, procedures for operating and maintaining clear wells and storage tanks, components and characteristics of distribution system facilities, operating and maintaining distribution systems, maintaining water quality in the system, disinfecting new and repaired facilities as well as water delivered to consumers, and techniques for recognizing hazards and developing safe procedures and programs. Operators learn to analyze and solve problems when they occur and perform mathematical calculations commonly associated with operating a distribution system.

At the end of each chapter, you must take an online chapter exam.. You will be able to see your score online; 70% is suggested.
After you have completed the last chapter exam and in order to receive a certificate of completion, you must contact Illinois Section AWWA to set up a proctored exam at a local utility or nearby facility. After you have completed and passed the final exam with a minimum score of 70%, the Illinois Section AWWA will issue a certificate of completion.
Upon completion of this Illinois Section AWWA course, IEPA will award aspiring operators:
|Class A & B Operator License.
||6 month credit towards the 3 year requirement (can earn up to 12 months total by taking additional qualifying courses.); must hold a minimum of 2 years hands-on experience to take IEPA exam
Class C Operator License
|6 month credit towards the 1 year requirement; must be matched with 6 months hands-on training
|Class D Operator License
|| 3 months credit towards the 6 month requirement; must be matched with 3 months of hands-on training
