Scope: This course is designed to train operators in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining water treatment plants, emphasizing safe practices and procedures. Information is presented on the importance and responsibilities of a water treatment plant operator, sources of water, reservoir management, and intake structures. Operators will learn how to safely operate and maintain coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection processes. They will also learn to control tastes and odors in drinking water, control corrosion to meet the requirements of the Lead and Copper Rule, perform basic water laboratory procedures, and solve arithmetic problems commonly associated with water treatment plant operations. An important segment of the course provides operators information on overall plant operation and covers topics such as daily operating procedures, regulation of flows, chemical use and handling, records and reports, plant maintenance, safety and security, emergency conditions and procedures, handling complaints, and energy conservation.

ABOUT HOME-STUDY COURSES: Each lesson is arranged for you to read a short section, write the answers to the questions at the end of the section, check your answers against suggested answers. At the end of each chapter, you must take an online chapter exam.. You will be able to see your score online; 70% is suggested.

After you have completed the last chapter exam and in order to receive a certificate of completion, you must contact Illinois Section AWWA to set up a proctored exam at a local utility or nearby facility. After you have completed and passed the final exam with a minimum score of 70%, the Illinois Section AWWA will issue a certificate of completion.


Upon completion of this Illinois Section AWWA course, IEPA will award aspiring operators:

 Class A & B Operator License. 6 month credit towards the 3 year requirement (can earn up to 12 months total by taking additional qualifying courses.); must hold a minimum of 2 years hands-on experience to take IEPA exam
Class C Operator License
6 month credit towards the 1 year requirement; must be matched with 6 months hands-on training
Class D Operator License   3 months credit towards the 6 month requirement; must be matched with 3 months of hands-on training
