Title: Rehab Roadmap: Coating Systems for Concrete Water Tanks and Other Process Areas
IEPA#: 5238
Delivered On: 12/13/12
Credit hours for water operators & engineers: 1.00
Total Hours: 1.00
Presented By: Tony Ippoliti, The Sherwin Williams Company

SUMMARY:  One of the causes of premature coating failure on exterior surfaces of concrete water storage tanks is the reaction of "old fashioned” coatings with the tank’s cementitious, alkaline substrate.  These coatings, allowed by AWWA D110, are generally more sensitive to moisture and may "hydrolyze” ;  not providing the long-term durability Owners may expect.

In addition, "standard” coatings need to be applied at temperatures above 50F and to surfaces that have cured for a minimum of 7 days.  These factors may hinder a tank builder’s ability to allow their crews to paint a tank as soon as they’d like … causing the tank Owner to "wait ‘till it paints”.
This presentation will describe a waterborne technology that can be used on concrete surfaces soon after placement and at temperatures as low as 35F.  Other beneficial features will also be presented using photo images of recent projects.

In addition, the means by which other concrete process areas can be protected with coatings will also be outlined using photo images from recent projects.
