Summary: Drinking water distribution systems with ammonia present from either naturally occurring ammonia or ammonia addition during chloramination are at risk for nitrification. Nitrification in drinking water distribution systems is undesirable and may result in water quality degradation and subsequent non–compliance with existing regulations. Therefore, nitrification control is necessary to maintain water quality in drinking water systems when free ammonia is present. The fundamental processes affecting nitrification occurrence in distribution systems are discussed: (1) chloramine chemistry, (2) nitrifier growth kinetics, and (3) monochloramine inactivation kinetics along with a summary of nitrification monitoring and responses typically implemented at drinking water utilities.


Presenter: David G. Wahman

David G. Wahman is currently an Environmental Engineer in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Office of Research and Development located in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a registered Professional Engineer and received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, M.S.E. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Following graduation, he conducted a Post-Doctoral fellowship at the USEPA before accepting a permanent position. He has a special interest in the application of molecular based tools, modeling, and biological treatment to address drinking water treatment and distribution system issues, and his research areas include biological removal of disinfection by-products from drinking water, biological drinking water treatment, distribution system nitrification, and chloramine chemistry.
