Summary: Most communities in Illinois are responsible for operation and maintenance of their sanitary sewer system. As these sewer systems continue to age, it is critical to set up an inflow and infiltration (I&I) program to maintain and extend the life of the system. We will discuss the key components of an I&I program. This includes understanding what causes system overflows and then knowing your system through mapping, flow monitoring and hydraulic modeling. The next step is identifying sources of excess flow through a sanitary sewer evaluation survey. Finally, we will discuss the most important step, a cost effective approach to rehabilitation of the system.

Presenter: Mike Young,  Senior Vice President for RJN Group, Inc. out of Wheaton, IL and is the engineering manager for their northern Midwest region. He has a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and has been a consultant in wastewater collection and treatment for the past 21 years.
